American Honour for Joe Cahill
by Damian McCarney
The widow of veteran republican Joe Cahill
has been honoured with a memento from an American Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH)
club named after her husband.
Division 10 of the AOH in Trenton, New Jersey was formed just over a year ago
and named after Joe Cahill in recognition of the contribution of the West
Belfast republican, who died in 2004, to the struggle and peace process.
AOH member, Michael Redmond was in town this week to present Joe’s widow Annie
Cahill with the official jacket of Division 10.
“From an American perspective we want to send out a message to our politicians
that we are going to resist Britain’s attempt to whitewash the whole Troubles,”
said Michael.
“Naming a division [of the AOH] after Joe Cahill sends a message that we want
the past recognised, and the contribution of the republican community to be
recognised, and not marginalised.”
Annie Cahill described it as a “great honour”.
“Joe was a very modest man and he didn’t like too much praise, but at the same
time he would appreciate anything that was done in his memory,” she said.
“It is also nice for me and my family that he is being remembered.”
